Financing

In order to sell the solar cookers for a reasonable price to the population they must be subsidised by donations.
The costs of manufacturing a solar cooker in Madagascar currently amount to approximately CHF 100.- and its vulgarisation to CHF 90.- on average (transport, solar cooking demonstrations, training and general cost of operation). Of these overall costs of CHF 190.-, CHF 40 are accounted for by the buyer.

For further development ADES needs financing for investments such as:

  • Construction of further workshops and centres of renewable energies
  • Purchasing of land
  • Furnishing of workshops and tools
  • Means of transport
  • etc.

Furthermore current costs must be covered:

  • salaries of the employee in Madagascar
  • running costs of the workshops
  • etc.

The management and administrative overheads are very low at ADES. All members of the board in Switzerland and Madagascar are volunteers.

Note:
Values in CHF vary due to fluctuating exchange rates of the Ariary (Ar) and depreciation of the currency in Madagascar.
The Ariary, the new official currency of Madagascar, was introduced on January 1, 2005. It replaced the Franc Malgache (FMG).
Change rate: 1 Ariary = 5 Francs Malgaches

Values must always be considered in relation to the wages in Madagascar. For example a carpenter currently earns approximately 130'000 Ar (= 650'000 FMG) per month. According to an exchange rate of 1 CHF = 1'600 Ar (June 2008), this equals about CHF 80.- a month.
