Mahajanga, the capital of the Boeny area in the north-western part of Madagascar, is the third largest on the island. It is the city that uses more charcoal than all others. Every day dozens of lorries bring in the necessary supplies, for over 95% of all households in Mahajanga cook with charcoal.
All aid organisations in Mahajanga deplore this fact. In our estimation there is a huge potential for our solar cookers and our energy saving ovens, and it is our declared goal for the future to diminish the use of charcoal, which causes such dramatic damage to the environment, also in and around Mahajanga.
At this stage ADES is already preparing for the opening ceremony for the Mahajanga Centre.
