RENEWABLE ENERGY FOR ST-AUGUSTIN

In 2009 ADES launched a pioneer project in the remote fishing village of St-Augustin in the south-west of Madagscar. The whole village was provided with renewable energy. Various Swiss firms and the German Society for Technical Cooperation (GIZ) supported ADES in this project.

The people in St-Augustin mostly live in small huts. These small huts were equipped with photovoltaic installations, which enable the inhabitants to light a lamp and listen to the radio in the evening. As many of them are illiterate, the radio is their only source of information and a means of self-improvement. Electric light also allows trainings and classes, or meetings of the community in the evening. And, incidentally, midwives at the St.-Augustin infirmary no longer have to deliver babies by candle-light. A fact that reduces complications during deliveries and makes them safer.

You can watch a documentary about the electrification of St-Augustin here.
